Welcome Home, Hendrix: Meet Our New Puppy

IMG_3288Alex and I have been talking about getting a dog for awhile now, but we were never able to because the condo we lived in didn’t allow dogs. We knew that once we got married and moved to Indiana, a dog was high on our priority list.

But after getting laid off from my job a day after getting to Fort Wayne, our dream of getting a Labradoodle named Walrus was put on hold.

We briefly talked about the possibility of getting a dog from the shelter, but we wanted a puppy under six months. And those are often hard to come by at a shelter. Plus, breed wise, I was afraid we were taking a huge risk.

We went to the ACSPCA to see their facility and what dogs they had available, and we (aka I) fell in love with a black and white boxer/border collie puppy. Since she wouldn’t be available later that week, we decided we’d go back once she was available with the hopes of adopting her.

Unfortunately, she found her forever home before we ever made it there. And the other 10 puppies they had? Yeah, they found homes too. Needless to say, I was pretty bummed out.

Long story short, Alex and I decided to go to the shelter on Saturday (July 2nd) to look at a 10-month old lab mix that was absolutely adorable. But we decided to meet with some other dogs too just in case he wasn’t a good fit. We really liked three of them – Charlie (the one we went in for), Maui and Chandler.

After meeting with all of them, Charlie was way too hyper and needed more space than we had for him. Maui was so sweet but literally shaking as we met with her. And Chandler – well, he was the one. The experience we had in the interaction room led us to believe that he was smart, playful, gentle and sweet, and I just knew we had to take him home.

So we did.

Now, we call him Hendrix. He’s a lab/retriever mix and is a little over a year and a half old. Even though we wanted a puppy, this little boy stole our hearts. After getting him home, I know without a shadow of a doubt that he is the perfect dog for us.

Every day, he opens up a little bit more, and I can’t wait to see his personality a month from now.

Thank you, Hendrix, for choosing us to be your forever home. We love you so much.
